Established as a freelance designer in 1989, I started my own studio and launched Garcia fonts & co type project. My first typefaces date back to the late 80’s when computers were at their first stage.
I co-founded Typerware (1996-2001), a studio specialized in any kind of projects based on typography, working for clients such as La Vanguardia newspaper, La Fura dels Baus and Primavera Sound Festival, among others. In 2003 I launched Typerepublic, a digital type foundry where I release and license some of my own fonts, and design custom typefaces for brands and corporate identities. I have designed custom typefaces for companies such as SEAT/Wolkswagen group, Victoria’s Secret, Acciona, Ferrovial, and text typefaces for newspapers such as La Gaceta, Tribuna (Salamanca, Spain) and La Discusión (Chile).
I have been awarded with two Certificates of Excellence in Type Design by the TDC (New York, 2002 – 2005) and a Certificate of Excellence in Type Design by the ATypI (Rome, 2001). I won a ED award in 2010 and a commendation at Creative review type design Award. I was also awarded the Adobe “Power of Design” award in 1997 and the “People’s Choice award” at Macromedia, San Francisco in 1997.
Some of my work have been featured in several publications and exhibitions and some of them is now part of Archives and Museum collections.
I have been researching on 18th century Spanish typefaces and punchcutting as part of my Pradell type design project. Also, I have researched on Spanish Modernism type design as part of my Super tipo Veloz revival. A more recent study involves multilingualism and multicultural type design awareness, which was part of my PhD research Arabic type from a multicultural perspective: Multi-script Latin-Arabic design (2013) at the University of Southampton.
I am the author of the book Type at work. The use of Type in Editorial Design, published by BIS (Amsterdam, 2003), IndexBook (Spanish edition) and Pyramid (French edition). Also, I have contributed with articles in catalogues and specialized magazines.
I am regularly invited to be part of scientific committees and to take part as keynote speaker at typography conferences and international design events.
Since 2015, I teach typography and type design at EINA — University School of Design and Art in Barcelona. Previously, I taught as an associate professor at UPF — Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona from 2000 to 2015, BAU school of Design (1992-2004) and ELISAVA (2001-2015). I am currently invited professor at different educational institutions and give lectures and workshops all around the world.
Presentations, lectures and keynotes include events such as ATypI conference (Helsinki’05, Lisbon’06 and Mexico’09), SND-ÑH (Lisboa 2002), ImagineIT (Accademia di Belle Arti, Bologna, 2007), Bauhaus-Universität (Weimar, 2007), St Bride conference (Birmingham, 2006), University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland, (Lugano, 2007), and International Type Conference in Valencia and Madrid, Spain (2004, 2006).
I have given workshops on type design in several institutions, such as Aalto University in Helsinki, ESAD – Superior School of Art and Design in Matosinhos (Portugal), Universidade Técnica de Lisboa in Portugal, UNL / National University in Santa Fe (Argentina), Andrés Bello University in Santiago (Chile).
Apart from my type design affairs, I like traveling, riding on my mountain bike and making friends. Nature and open air has inspired me in many senses. Some of my type work has been sketched during my hikes in the Himalayas or my beloved Pyrenees mountains, where I belong. I consider any design project as a journey. Exploration of other disciplines and areas of knowledge, such as Science, Sociology, Philosophy or Fine Art is also rewarding and influencing new ideas for any project or previous research.
Traveling is a continuous process in both my personal and professional life. Nature is an unlimited outsource of raw material for new ideas to come.
