THE GARCIA FONTS PROJECT

top
Garcia fonts & co.'s constant aim was to spread knowledge of the work and ideas of those who had something to tell about type.

Garcia fonts & co. was the name for a digital typeface project that was open to everyone who wanted to collaborate and/or take part. It was an experimental project with a non-comercial / non-profit aim. It endeavoured to self-manage with the distribution of all the available fonts shown in the catalogue.

It was an open project that was made possible by contributions from everyone who collaborated actively with their personal items. So, the common surname «Garcia» (as «Smith» in England) appears with the clear intention to group all contributors. This was, in short, an interactive project in which the exchange of ideas and processes became the motor that served to generate a highly interesting typographic forum. It sought at the same time to promote the sharing of typographic experiences, and to provide a showcase for a range of ideas and possibilities capable of being used as a means of communication.

Garcia fonts & co. wanted to demystify the traditional concept of typography in order to gain different points of view. With the coming of the computer, type design was no longer a subject assigned to the anointed few; instead it has been spread to everyone who wishes to approach it. In other words, the computer has democraticized type design. The Garcia fonts & co. approach is the result of the introduction of new technologies into communication media. But, «we are not to be considered the alternative to anything».

The project, that began in Spring 1993 by Andreu Balius, introduced itself as a type process over the expressive possibilities of digital typeface design. It was more interested in experimental than commercial typefaces. «We were not involved with the excess of business which surrounds the distribution of digital typeface design. Garcia fonts & co. avoided any distribution system where profit proves to be the only objective. We truly valued the exchange of ideas and the direct contact with the Garcia people, and the fact that they gained enjoyment from a common sharing of work».

Garcia fonts & co. as a design project has been awarded by APPLE España / Creativity News (1995) and ADOBE Systems Europe (1997), and invited to join the FuseLab at FUSE'95 (Berlin).
THE CATALOGUE
The typefaces from the catalogue have been designed by collaborators and contributors, and they have been the type material for exchanging and new future incomings into the Garcia fonts type library.

THE LIBRARY issues
The fonts from the Garcia fonts & co. catalogue were featured in a collection of folded issues (libraries) that built up the type library of fonts available for distribution and exchange among contributors.
