Elizabeth Friedlander (nacida Friedländer, 1903-1984) nació en Berlín. Estudió diseño y tipografía con E.R.Weiss en la Academia de Berlín y trabajó como diseñadora gráfica para la elegante revista de Ullstein Die Dame. Recibió el encargo para diseñar una tipografía para la Bauersche Giesserei de Frankfurt am Main, un encargo muy poco común para una mujer en aquellos tiempos.
Su tipo Elizabeth se grabó en la Bauersche Giesserei en 1938.
Georg Hartmann escribe que el tipo es uno de los mejores y más bellos jamás producidos. Es particularmente apreciado por las prensas privadas y para impresos que requieren un toque delicado.
Penrose Annual (1936, Volúmen 41) destaca que la Elizabeth es el tipo de mayor éxito del año... seguro que el tipo más distinguido que llegó de Alemania desde la muerte de Rudolf Koch. Elizabeth es de un gusto intachable...veremos que libros que llegarán de Alemania nos mostrarán que un tipo más se añade a la más exclusiva de todas las clasificaciones tipográficas: el buen tipo de texto.
En 2005 el diseñador y tipógrafo español Andreu Balius recibió el encargo de Fundición Tipográfica Bauer, sucesora de Bauersche Giesserei, de digitalizar el tipo, respetando su gracia, su delicadez y su belleza artesanal.

Elizabeth Friedlander (née Friedländer, 1903-1984) was born in Berlin.
She studied design and typography with E.R. Weiss at the Berlin Academy and went to work as a graphic designer for the elegant Ullstein journal “Die Dame”. She was commissioned to design a typeface for the Bauersche Giesserei in Frankfurt am Main, a most unusual commission for a woman at that time.
Her typeface Elizabeth was first cut by the Bauersche Giesserei in 1938.
Georg Hartmann writes that the typeface is one of the best and most beautiful ones ever produced. It is particularly loved by private presses and for printing jobs that require a delicate touch.
Penrose Annual (1936, Volume 41) points to “Elizabeth” as Undoubtly the year’s most successful type... surely the most distinguished type that has arrived from Germany since the death of Rudolf Koch. “Elizabeth” is in impeccable taste... we shall find that books arriving from Germany will show us that one more type has been added to that most exclusive of all typographical classifications: the good text type.
In 2005 the spanish designer and typographer Andreu Balius was commissioned by Fundición Tipográfica Bauer, the successors of the Bauersche Giesserei, to digitize the typeface, while retaining it’s grace and delicacy and original craftmanship.
